Product details
Boxing in the American Ghetto. Loic Wacquant describes the art of boxing and its social contexts in the black ghetto of Chicago's South Side from a perspective that is radically committed to participant observation. During his doctoral studies at the University of Chicago, Loic Wacquant immersed himself in the scene of a local boxing club for several years and subjected himself to the strict discipline of the boxers, which encompassed both the training itself and their entire lives outside the gym. Through this observational participation, he uncovered the social and sensory logic of a sport that most people only know as media spectacles of championship fights.
