Monotheism is arguably the most important discovery or invention in the history of thought. It developed in the course of attempts to cope with complexity in ways that were more intricate than expected. God's (supposed) revelation remains mysterious: Is an intellectual and cultic reference to God even possible, or is it a paradoxical endeavor that only produces its subject? How might one approach this subject? Is it even a subject, or does God transcend all concepts and human reason? Is perhaps negative theology the most reasonable "theology"? Or should one abandon intellectuality in relation to God? Can one perhaps recognize God through traces? And why would one know that these are His traces? The book raises questions about the appropriate way to deal with the unavailable; and even the act of questioning proves to be problematic. The questions remain unanswered.
