A pilgrimage took Egeria, a noblewoman from the western part of the Roman Empire, through Palestine, Egypt, and Syria for several years towards the end of the 4th century. In several letters, she reported on these travels. The preserved part of her account was discovered in the late 19th century and was a sensation for philologists, historians, archaeologists, and liturgists. This oldest pilgrimage account written by a woman in late antique Latin not only provided invaluable information about the condition of the holy sites shortly after the "Constantinian shift," but also documented for the first time the emergence of the church year in Jerusalem. This special edition (not part of the series) is the thoroughly revised new edition of the volume from the Fontes Christiani series. It also includes the fragments from Peter Diaconus, which help reconstruct lost texts.
