In confession, opinions diverge: it is the most personal and intense sacrament, yet also the forgotten and unloved sacrament. This book explores new paths to reflect on the idea, crisis, and opportunity of the sacrament of penance. Following a theological self-assurance with a focus on canon law, there are personal accounts from both classical and modern, male and female confessors involved in parish, prison, and pilgrimage ministry, as well as in counseling for pregnant women and couples, and at public festivals and other life contexts. Afterwards, believers, children, teenagers, and adults, both engaged and distanced from the church, couples and singles share their experiences with guilt and sin, as well as penance, confession, and reconciliation. Finally, theologians invite critical cross-thinking and further reflection.
