Product details

The book of Tobit, transmitted in the Greek language, is considered one of the "hidden treasures" of the Old Testament. Often overlooked by theology, it has been a popular and engaging example of the "works of mercy" in the everyday piety of Jews and Christians throughout the centuries. It tells the story of a family living in Assyria after the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, who experience the help of their God during a severe test of faith. They undergo the biblical experience that is programmatically summarized in the name of the main character, Tobit: "God is good." The book is designed as a novel-like instructional text for Jews in the diaspora, encouraging them to hold onto the traditions of their ancestors and to stand firm in their law despite the threats they face. The commentary convincingly highlights how the Tobit narrative serves this purpose.
