The Knopp Trilogy is one of the most famous works by Wilhelm Busch, following Max and Moritz. The couplet "Becoming a father is not hard, being a father is very much so" comes from this trilogy. The trilogy consists of three parts: The Adventures of a Bachelor was the first part, with its sequels appearing as Mr. and Mrs. Knopp in 1876 and Julchen in 1877. For the first time, the citizen is not a victim of strong-willed pests, as was the case in Max and Moritz or Hans Huckebein, the unlucky raven, but is consistently the main character. At that time, Wilhelm Busch lived in circumstances that shared certain characteristics with his hero Tobias Knopp. He found his housekeeper in his sister Fanny, who was married to Pastor Hermann Nöldeke. In Wiedensahl, he first lived in his parents' house and then moved to his sister's family.
