The devil and his witches are often seen today as mystically glorified figures, at best serving as mere figures of fun or children's bogeymen. In medieval times, it was completely different. The devil was regarded as the personified adversary of God, who, with the help of his witches, sought to seize control of the world. This widespread belief culminated in the dark era of witch hunts. The author argues that the Christianization of the Germanic tribes is directly linked to the emergence of witchcraft and devil beliefs.
