An ode to the great American dream: Texas in 1934. Weldon Holland leads a bleak existence in the rural wilderness. The only break in the monotony comes from the gangster couple Bonnie and Clyde, who camp on the property after a bank robbery. Ten years later, Weldon narrowly survives the Battle of the Bulge as a lieutenant and saves the Jewish war prisoner Rosita Lowenstein from death. Back in Texas, he enters the booming oil business, where he soon becomes embroiled in a dangerous game of intrigue, corruption, and the pursuit of power.
