When young Henrietta moves to South Africa at the behest of her parents in the late 1950s, it is intended as a punishment. However, Henrietta is glad to escape the constraints and conventions of her hometown and begins to build a new life in the foreign land. When she meets the Scotsman Ian, her happiness seems complete. But soon, the two find themselves in conflict with the system of racial segregation.
