Product details
The mass deaths on the front lines of World War I inspired numerous artists in their work. Erich Drechsler, born in Gera, created pieces between 1919 and 1924 that addressed the horror of front-line deaths. He, who only knew the war images transmitted to the home front and lacked personal memories and visual experiences, drew upon the late medieval motif of the Dance of Death. The personified Death served as a metaphor for dying in the trenches. Inspired by contemporary representations and descriptions, Erich Drechsler produced a fantastical image of the front-line events, which thematizes the mass deaths in an allegorical visual conception while remaining true to historical reality. Kirsten Fitzke systematically compiles Erich Drechsler's works on World War I for the first time in this study and positions the work of this now-forgotten artist within the context of the era's protagonists. Erich Drechsler's drawings related to World War I were exhibited in the 1920s alongside works by Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz, George Grosz, and others. The investigation reconstructs this contemporary context and situates the works of the Thuringian artist within the critical war art of the Weimar Republic.
