"Not being able to have children weighed heavily," says Sister Matthäa. Seventeen Benedictine nuns from the Fahr convent share their life stories candidly. Sister Fidelis demands, "Something must change in the Catholic Church." The women talk about their backgrounds, their decision to join the convent, their daily lives in the rhythm of work and prayer, and life in a community that was not of their choosing. Deprivations, disappointments, but also joys are addressed. The touching portraits offer a glimpse behind the convent walls, into a foreign, fascinating world. They document a way of life that may soon cease to exist in this form. Photographer Christoph Hammer accompanied the women for a year.
