Abstract: Hilla and Bernd Becher have been present in German and international museums and galleries for forty years now. Since their photo books have reached the basic selection of medium-sized bookstores, the question of whether the Bechers' work qualifies as art, and if so, where it should be categorized, is rarely discussed anymore. However, this question was quite relevant during the early years of their work in the 1960s and 1970s. In a 1972 article published in Artforum, a statement by Hilla Becher is quoted as follows: "The question if this is a work of art or not is not very interesting.".
