The successful travel author Carmen Rohrbach recounts her attempt to escape from East Germany in 1974 in this autobiographical graphic novel. At the age of 27, she, along with her boyfriend, tries to swim across the Baltic Sea in the darkness to leave the country. After two days and nights filled with constant fear of drowning or being discovered, they are eventually picked up by a border patrol; two years of imprisonment follow until she is expelled. Shortly thereafter, the trained biologist travels as a documentary filmmaker and author to the Galapagos Islands and eventually around the world. Comic artist and illustrator Daniel Haas, along with Simon Traschinsky, who adapted Rohrbach's book for this comic, present an impressive debut that uniquely brings to life the person of Carmen Rohrbach, her desire for freedom, her emotional world, and her love for nature.
