Apocalypse, city, war, religion, portrait, exile, and existential upheaval - Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966) is one of the outstanding artists of German Expressionism, who captured the tremors of his time with seismographic sensitivity in both his visual and literary works. On the 50th anniversary of the Jewish artist Ludwig Meidner's death, the focus is on his works from his exile in London between 1939 and 1953 - sketchbooks, watercolors, charcoal and chalk drawings created under the most challenging external conditions. They represent a blend of inner experience and commentary on the times with the highest intensity. With unflinching directness as well as symbolic condensation, these works depict horror, isolation, persecution, and annihilation, as well as a grotesquely absurd world that Meidner uniquely staged with mockery and biting humor, sarcasm, and bizarre exaggeration.
