Eight large-format altarpieces by Rueland Frueauf the Elder, created around 1490/91 for a church in Salzburg, are at the center of this volume. In addition to Frueauf's work, the publication also showcases selected works by artists from his circle, such as the Master of Grossgmain, as well as the creations of Frueauf's son, Rueland the Younger. This first-time juxtaposition allows for an in-depth comparison of the painters. New insights are provided by art technological investigations conducted during the restoration of the Salzburg altarpieces.
