Product details

Whether a serious threat or an opportunity for humanity, artificial intelligence is a recurring theme in science fiction, from classics like E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops," Asimov's robot novels, and William Gibson's "Neuromancer" series to contemporary works like Theresa Hannig's "Pantopia" and Martha Wells' "Murderbot" series. However, AI is no longer just a topic in novels – AI is now: ChatGPT, Dall-E, DeepL, and Midjourney are on everyone's lips, Meta is training its in-house AI with user data, and all of this is influencing our work and information world, especially for creators in the arts. It is only logical to focus on the topic of AI in this year's science fiction. At the same time, a look at German-language science fiction reveals new developments that the Science Fiction Year aims to explore in more detail: a new generation of writers is drawing attention to themselves and their themes, giving familiar science fiction topics new twists, and thus connecting new dramaturgies and writing styles beyond known boundaries in their texts. The 39th edition of the almanac, initiated by Wolfgang Jeschke in 1986, will also include a review of developments in literature, film, series, comics, and games. The yearbook will be rounded off with reviews, an overview of the most important genre awards, obituaries that particularly honor filmmaker Rainer Erler, and a comprehensive bibliography of science fiction books published in German in 2023.
