The passion of the Swing Kids for jazz and English clothing, their dance style, and their rebellious individualism prompted the Nazis to take massive action against them: hundreds of young people were taken into protective custody for their anglophilia, mostly without official charges or trials, and many ended up in concentration camps. Jörg Ueberall traced the origins of the first urban youth subculture in Hamburg, which drew its identity from music. He chronicles the development of the Swing Kids from their emergence in 1936 to their (non-)end in 1943 - 1945 and explores what became of the victims and perpetrators up to the present day.
