Cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are three conditions that become increasingly common with advancing age and threaten vision. While cataracts are very well treatable—over 90% of patients see significantly better after surgery—glaucoma primarily relies on prevention and early detection. Medication therapy can usually lower elevated eye pressure and halt the progression of the disease. However, it should be initiated as early as possible, as once vision is lost, it unfortunately cannot be restored. Age-related macular degeneration threatens central vision and thus sharp vision and reading. Particularly its most debilitating form, wet macular degeneration, responds to new treatments. Therefore, it is especially important to detect the disease early in this case as well.
