This introduction addresses central phenomena and problems of the historical syntax of German. Since older language stages are only accessible through written documents, questions of methodology and the interpretation of sources are discussed in detail. The core consists of the presentation of individual syntactic developments, including case syntax, agreement, and word order. The explanation of syntactic change is also extensively addressed, with external approaches such as standardizations and language contact being considered alongside internal, functional, and formal explanations.
