Jan van Werth, Nikolaus Gülich, and Katharina Henot: Cologne in Times of Violence, War, and Religion. Cologne in the 17th century was a tumultuous and challenging period marked by General Jan van Werth, rebel Nikolaus Gülich, Jesuit Father Friedrich Spee, and postmistress Katharina Henot. This era witnessed the Swedish attack on Deutz, witch burnings, and the last major plague disaster that struck Cologne. During this time, a specific Catholic milieu developed in Cologne that continues to shape the city today. Cologne also served as a gateway for the Counter-Reformation into the Empire and was an important hub between the major European powers. Therefore, the city played a significant yet largely unrecognized role throughout the 17th century. Historian Hans-Wolfgang Bergerhausen, who resides near Würzburg, offers in this volume the first comprehensive account of this period in Cologne's history, the effects of which are still felt today.
