The new volume of the successful history of the city of Cologne focuses on the 19th century, which transformed Cologne into a modern metropolis. Historian Jürgen Herres vividly describes how Cologne developed into the economic and transportation hub of the Rhine region. The period from 1815 to 1871 was particularly a time of foundation for Cologne: in 1842, the city, the Catholic Church, and the Prussian monarchy decided to complete the Cologne Cathedral. The Rhineland Carnival took on its present form during this time. Well-known pioneers and entrepreneurs, such as the nun Maria Clementine Martin, inventor Nicolaus August Otto, banker Abraham Oppenheim, art collector Sulpiz Boisserée, clergyman Adolph Kolping, and even Karl Marx, who published radical newspapers in Cologne in 1842/43 and 1848/49, shaped the city, its society, and its future. At the same time, Cologne emerged as a center of Rhineland liberalism against the power claims of Berlin. Events in Cologne, such as the arrest of the Archbishop of Cologne in 1837, shook all of Germany. The internal situation and external significance of Cologne changed rarely as quickly as during its journey to becoming the modern metropolis of the 19th century.
