J.R.R. Tolkien wrote countless tales as he recorded the myths and legends of Middle-earth. In the legendary book of lost tales, the oldest conception of Tolkien's world, even older than The Silmarillion, they are documented. Often, traces of them can be found, foreign-sounding names like distant echoes of bygone times in The Lord of the Rings, the great completed fantasy epic.

The ten stories about the Valar and the founding of their sea realm, Ilúvatar and his world plan, or the arrival of the Elves and the construction of Kôr are told to the mariner Eriol on the Lonely Isle, thus depicting the prehistory and early history of Middle-earth.
