Given the significance of what they do, the controversies that often arise around them, and the violent individuals they sometimes face, it is remarkable that in the history of the United States, only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five. His body was found in the small basement of a lakeside cabin that he had built himself and often used on weekends. When he failed to appear for a trial on Monday morning, his court clerks panicked, called the FBI, and eventually the agents discovered the crime scene. There was no break-in, no struggle, just two bodies - Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. I didn’t know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison.
