A wish that Martin could not refuse his grandfather Franz: to undertake one last great journey to America, to the places Franz had not seen since his captivity in 1944. Martin embarks on this adventure, even though he only knows his grandfather from the bitter stories told by his mother. Under the scorching Texas sun, among the ruins of the barracks, and through encounters with witnesses of the past, the war years and the time that followed come alive again in the old man. Finally, he finds words for what had forever changed his life back then. With each memory and every conversation, Martin gets closer to his grandfather, and slowly he begins to understand the fractures that run through his family. He realizes how much the past has shaped his own life and sees his own family situation more clearly.
