In hardly any other country are bows and arrows more intertwined with the history and culture of a people than in Japan. The bow was used not only to hunt animals and defeat enemies but, according to popular belief, also to conceive children, heal the sick, drive away demons, ensure good harvests, convey messages from the gods, and predict the future. The outstanding significance of the bow is reflected in Japanese literature, theater, and the visual arts. The author also explores the influences of Daoism, Shintoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism on archery in Japan. Over 190 magnificent and expressive color woodcuts from the 19th century accompany the reader on a journey through Japanese mythology and intellectual history, illustrating historical events.
