In France, the small text was published under the title "Letter to a Hostage" in 1941, and in Germany in 1955. Léon Werth, a Jewish childhood friend of Saint-Exupéry, had to hide from the Nazis. From his American exile, Saint-Exupéry writes this "letter" to Léon Werth as a preface to a planned but never published book. In it, he recounts his journey as a refugee, his experiences in the desert, and reflects on "the essential" and on friendship. Saint-Exupéry also dedicates "The Little Prince" to his friend Léon Werth.
