When "The Defector," Siegfried Lenz's second novel, was published in spring 2016, 65 years late, it became an outstanding success with both the press and the public, remaining at the top of the bestseller lists for weeks. The literary critics agreed: had "The Defector" been released in 1952, it would undoubtedly have been considered one of the great post-war novels, alongside Grass's "The Tin Drum," Böll's "Billard at Half-Past Ten," and Andersch's "Sanzibar or the Last Reason." The unique success edition now presents "The Defector" in a corresponding design, inspired by the works of graphic designer Werner Rebhuhn, who shaped the appearance of the Hoffmann und Campe publishing house in the 1950s and 1960s and created numerous book covers for Siegfried Lenz.
