1807. Sergeant Franz Schirmer is a mercenary working for various rulers. When the Battle of Prussian Eylau ends in a stalemate, he finds himself in a hopeless situation and deserts. In the depopulated landscape, he encounters the half-starved Maria Dutka, who is determined to kill him. However, he promises her and her weakened father food if they help him. As conditions normalize, the two leave the area and start a family after Schirmer changes his name. In 1938, widow Amelia Schneider-Johnson dies in the USA, leaving behind a fortune of millions. Franz Schirmer is left wounded in Greece during World War II in 1944 and sees no way to return to Germany. He is eventually supported by American lawyer George Carey and his translator Maria Kolin.
