The human ability to imagine represents a rich potential for creative and therapeutic processes. Imagination and creativity can move mountains. Many therapeutic methods utilize imaginations. The katathym imaginative psychotherapy (KIP) uniquely places them at the center of the treatment process: as therapeutically induced and guided daydreams that unfold a special effect through their symbolic content and the affective moments of the process. The katathymic (i.e., affect-driven) imaginations integrate with the conversational phases within the understanding and action framework of psychodynamic psychotherapy. From a neurobiological perspective, katathymic imagination also provides a platform through which established approaches from other methods can be utilized and integrated.
