What does a scientifically grounded and future-oriented medical education look like? With the National Competency-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine (NKLM) and the reform of the Medical Licensing Regulations, medical education is set to undergo significant changes. Key points include a stronger practical orientation, competency-based learning, teaching, and assessment, increased emphasis on communicative and social skills, as well as a strengthening of scientific rigor. For everyone involved in shaping and implementing medical education, this has profound implications for curricular planning and the execution of teaching and examinations.
For the second edition, the content has been comprehensively revised and updated in light of these challenges. Prerequisites for successful learning and teaching in medical education include motivation, (meta-)cognition, clinical reasoning, and situated learning. The teaching process from start to finish should be systematically planned: implementing competency-oriented learning objectives, achieving curricular integration, and systematically aligning teaching and assessments. Teaching formats for both large and small groups should be designed to be interactive and engaging, feedback should be utilized systematically, and clinical instruction should be optimized.
Competency-oriented assessments should be conducted throughout all stages of the program, ensuring the quality of examinations and systematically evaluating teaching success. Scientific rigor should also be realized in teaching by consistently considering current scientific evidence. A consistently didactic chapter structure with introductions, toolboxes, summaries, case studies, and numerous tables and colorful graphics allows for a high degree of practical relevance. Therefore, this book serves as an ideal support for planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching in medicine, as well as a compact companion and reference work for individual continuing education for all those involved in medical education.
