When people develop dementia, it is commonly described as a frightening, traumatizing, and stigmatizing experience. The editors counter these assumptions with research findings and case studies of individuals with dementia. They demonstrate that positive psychological concepts such as hope, humor, creativity, resilience, spirituality, personal growth, and wisdom can be linked to well-being and quality of life, and can be utilized by those affected to contribute to a better life with dementia. The authors were able to show in their previous systematic literature review "Living positively with dementia" that some individuals can live positively despite a dementia diagnosis, and that some people with dementia experience "small gifts" in their lives with the condition. Previous research has often overlooked this positive aspect.
