Children of parents with mental illnesses or substance abuse issues are at an increased risk of being abused or neglected. The resources that act as protective factors are often weakly developed in the affected parents. To strengthen the resources of parents that reduce the risk of abuse for children, a modular group program has been developed and evaluated. It focuses on promoting stress and coping management for parents. The goal is to achieve better protection for the children. The manual first provides an overview of various forms of abuse and neglect and discusses empirical findings on the risk and protective factors in the development of neglect and child abuse. It then describes in detail the implementation of the four modules of the group program.
