The scent of rain in the Balkans tells the story of the Sephardic Jewish family Salom from Sarajevo, whose lives take a radical turn with the outbreak of World War I. Five women's destinies unfold during a time of great social upheaval. Against the backdrop of political events between 1914 and 1945, the five daughters - Nina, Buka, Klara, Blanki, and Riki - embark on a quest for self-discovery and love. In doing so, they often disregard ethnic and confessional boundaries, forging new paths. Gordana Kuic depicts in her century-spanning novel a world that has been forever lost: the culture of peaceful coexistence among Bosnian Jewish, Muslim, Serbian Orthodox, and Catholic social classes in the vibrant capital of Sarajevo of that time.
