Medieval manuscripts and reliquaries, contemporary street art and installation art: The sacred takes on many forms. Inextricably linked to religion and spirituality, it signifies an approach to the divine. While theological texts reflect on the nature of the sacred, it can also be directly visible and experienced in images, objects, bodies, and places. The authors of this volume examine the sacred from an art and cultural historical perspective. It becomes evident that very different concepts of the sacred have shaped art, culture, and literature from the early Middle Ages to the present.
