Product details

For his exhibition "Vous êtes chez moi! / You are with me!" in 2005, Eric Hattan transforms the exhibition space at FRAC Alsace in Sélestat into a ghost town. Boxes from the art storage of the collection, both filled and empty, become the building material for a deserted settlement. No one is left; only the artist's video works reveal traces of human life in this journey – scarecrows, a plastic bag in the wind, an abandoned sheep dragging its fleece behind it. "Hattan's topography encompasses edge and transition zones: derelict houses, wastelands, ruins, abandoned and forsaken objects, the remnants of the world," write Maja Naef and Ralph Ubl in their essay. Eric Hattan focuses his attention on the abandoned, the forsaken, on the remains that have (yet) to be disposed of. This attention is always in motion, wandering, dedicating a "residual attention" to the remnants that acknowledges their transience. "No one is left" continues the exhibition and expands it to the world outside the space. Eric Hattan wanders through the forgotten places of our world and establishes relationships of neighborhood between inside and outside, hidden and manifest, image and casing, box and art. In his video film, he applies this topographical gaze to the exhibition itself. The book thus becomes, like the boxes in the exhibition, a container, the film a part of the installation, the space a fleeting, abandoned place, a ghost town with art relics. The people have moved on.
