Porcelain is the material of the English artist Edmund de Waal (born 1964). He creates delicate vessels and pieces from it, which he precisely places in specially constructed display cases. The porcelain is imbued with the sensitivity of its creation, hard as stone yet exceedingly fragile. In groups or individually, the pieces become actors in a dialogue of memory and archived history. For his exhibition at both locations of the Max Hetzler Gallery in Berlin, de Waal follows in the footsteps of Walter Benjamin, through whose writings he came to know the city. The title "Irrkunst" refers to Benjamin's idea of consciously getting lost through art. In the gallery spaces on Bleibtreustrasse - from the winter garden, Benjamin's school can be seen - de Waal's works allude to Benjamin's childhood and his passion for collecting and archiving.
