Do you know the well-known sayings "Humor is the best medicine" or "Laughter is healthy"? Unfortunately, medical practice is often characterized by furrowed brows, fear-mongering, fatalism (for example, the prognosis of "incurability"), and a grim complexity. Only a few doctors and healers, like the great Hunter "Patch" Adams, have recognized the importance and necessity of allowing laughter to resonate in practices and clinics. What could be worse than a patient saying they have lost their laughter? What could be more beautiful than a first smile after a long crisis? However, to let the juices of humor flow, one does not need to be a trained clown. It is enough to have an openness to the unexpectedly funny and a willingness to laugh at oneself. Here, the author encourages us to awaken our inner fool, both as caregivers and as patients.
