Cultural life that deserves its name should not be exhausted in the saturation of more or less happy consumers of certain cultural goods; rather, it should prove to be hospitable from the perspective of the Other. This idea is tested in this book in light of the historical experience of an excessive freedom that threatened to destroy the long-established web of European ways of life. Concrete manifestations of this freedom are discussed under titles such as genocide, biopolitics, and exclusion. At the center of attention is the question of how the challenge of cultural forms of life to hospitality in the name of freedom is currently significant for the meaning of cultural life. Those who can afford to ask about the possibilities of a happy life are already happy—at least when measured against the glaring situations elsewhere.
