This conference proceedings examines concepts and practices of Christian charity as well as care for the poor and sick in connection with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela from the Middle Ages to the present. It presents historical manifestations of hospitality along the Camino de Santiago, such as the monastic (or Benedictine) reception of the sick and strangers, or the emergence of hospitals and inns in the outskirts of European cities during the High Middle Ages. Additionally, literary and art historical sources that address this theme are compiled and analyzed from both aesthetic and anthropological perspectives. Richly illustrated and supported by a variety of source excerpts, it vividly illustrates the enduring significance of hospitality along the Camino de Santiago up to the present day.
