Children experience our world very differently than we adults do. They are spontaneous, sensory, and live in the here and now. Children learn about the world anew every day, and they usually do this with joy and enthusiasm. "Goodbye Grandma," however, does not focus on the everyday recognition, feeling, and learning in the world of children, but rather on learning about the final and irreversible farewell. Joy and sorrow play a significant role here. In "Goodbye Grandma," a child tells the story of their grandmother as she was when she was still healthy. But then Grandma becomes ill, very ill, and one day the family learns that Grandma will not get better. Grandma is moved to a palliative care unit, and the child experiences this phase very intensely and finds a way to cope with the situation. Grandma dies, and this book illustrates the first steps in the grieving process that are taken together with the parents.
