In spring 2014, the architectural collective raumlaborberlin called for the design of dream hotel rooms for the city of Mannheim as part of the Theater der Welt festival. An internationally composed jury selected 22 designs, which were built in a public workshop in front of the National Theatre and then erected in characteristic locations throughout the city. Temporary sleeping places made of wood, greenhouse panels, and plastic bowls, with and without privacy screens, were created at the harbor in Mannheim, in pedestrian zones, and in parks. Theatergoers could spend a night in the experimental accommodations during the festival. The publication documents the creation process of HOTEL shabbyshabby with texts and many colorful images, as well as the reactions of the guests.
