The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a standardized language test for Chinese as a foreign language, conducted in China and worldwide at licensed test centers. Upon successfully passing the exam, an HSK certificate is awarded. The target audience includes Chinese learners who wish to specifically prepare for levels 1 and 2 of the current HSK or want to assess their previously acquired knowledge.

The practice book begins with exercises for the listening and reading comprehension sections of the exam. Following a section that corresponds to the length of the exam situation, there are tips and advice (in Chinese and German) on how to approach each part of the exam, along with 20 additional exercises with solutions. After the exercises, there is a complete model test with solutions. The appendix includes both a thematic and an alphabetical vocabulary list.
