Product details

The origins of the city of Lehrte lie in agriculture and industry. Transportation has shaped Lehrte - in fact, it has made its current form possible. Although the practical aspects may dominate from some perspectives, there is beauty, value, and memorable elements in the city. A group of history enthusiasts began twelve years ago to make these aspects visible by placing bronze information plaques on historically significant buildings and sites. The idea for this form of honoring historical buildings originated with local historians Klaus Neubauer and Werner Nawrath. The two residents of Lehrte learned about similar projects in other cities in 1997. A visit to some of these cities by Klaus Neubauer, Werner Nawrath, and Heinrich Herzog quickly led to plans for Lehrte. Retired industrial master Heinrich Herzog took charge of designing the plaques. The project was supported by the now-dissolved Lehrte Region Traffic Association (VRL) and the Lower Saxony Heritage Association, Lehrte group. Most of the plaques are located in the city center, with a few in the surrounding districts. The first plaque was dedicated to the town hall and was unveiled in August 2000, with 29 more to follow in the next 11 years. This book documents these plaques and the associated buildings in their entirety.
