In the depots of the Ethnological Museum Berlin, numerous objects remain today that were seized by the German colonial power between 1885 and 1918 in what was once "German East Africa," including during the Maji Maji War. In the project "Humboldt Lab Tanzania," Tanzanian and German scientists, curators, and artists critically engage with selected artifacts, including a large Swahili drum, objects related to healing practices, and a talisman. With the relocation of the Ethnological Museum to the Humboldt Forum, the collections from the former German colonies and the often problematic provenance of the objects have increasingly entered public consciousness. Project participants from Germany and Tanzania are exploring new ethnological and museological approaches to the shared colonial heritage.
