Product details

In the debate about a ban on prostitution, sex workers (and especially male sex workers) rarely have a voice. Many feminists hold a deeply sexist view of prostitutes, which could be attributed to conservative old men: as oppressed victims in need of liberation. However, the demand stemming from this paternalism that prostitution should be banned is rarely advocated by the sex workers themselves. In "Playing the Whore," Melissa Gira Grant, a journalist and former sex worker, turns things upside down and allows the actors themselves to speak. In doing so, she exposes the position of Alice Schwarzer and others as a paternalistic desire for control and advocates for a fundamentally new perspective on the sex industry. She also takes into account male and transgender sex work.
