In 1824, Heinrich Heine hiked from Göttingen to the Harz Mountains and subsequently wrote his travelogue, which became one of his most famous books. "Die Harzreise" was first published in full in 1826 as part one of "Reisebilder," after initially falling victim to Prussian censorship due to its biting social criticism and satirical attacks on contemporary figures and events. Nearly 180 years later, photographer Günter Pump set out to the Harz, retracing Heine's steps to capture in images the places and sites described in "Die Harzreise." Views of the towns visited by Heine, such as Clausthal and Goslar, alternate with atmospheric nature shots from today's Harz National Park, including the Brocken and the Ilsetal. Pump's photos, in conjunction with Heine's text, convey an immediate sense of place.
