In the late 1960s, when lesbians came together within the homosexual and women's movements, their aim was to redefine their socially stigmatized identity and express it in a comprehensive way. It is hardly known to a broader public that this led to the creation of a lesbian culture that spans all areas of life. A central role in this, particularly for Switzerland and specifically for Zurich, has been played by the Women's Center Zurich (FZ). In an ethnographically oriented study, Karin Moser presents historical changes in the external and self-concepts of lesbian existence, coming out processes, and the development of lesbian culture, especially in the city of Zurich and at the Women's Center. She examines lesbian-specific groups and activities, the motivations of the users, their definitions of lesbian identity, and more.
