The I Ching is the oldest foundational work of Chinese sciences, architecture, geomancy, and medicine. As an oracle book, it was consulted in ancient times for all questions related to politics, economics, and healing arts. The primary interests were clarity about the current situation, its anticipated development, and the appropriate courses of action. The 64 hexagrams, with their total of 4,096 transformation possibilities, provided answers to all inquiries. In the field of healing, a determined hexagram reveals patterns of disharmony. Disharmonies in the yin-yang relationship of the organism manifest just as disharmonies in the individual organ functional cycles, as well as the cause-and-effect relationships of these disharmonies. Additionally, each hexagram conveys an image of the essential and fundamental through its characteristic picture and the corresponding classical commentary on its symbolism.
