Product details
Emily Hobhouse was a remarkable woman who accomplished significant things in her life and is now unfortunately at risk of being forgotten in Europe. From January to May 1901, she became the first British civilian to visit six concentration camps in South Africa, where mainly women and children of the Boers were held captive, and she reported on the conditions in these camps. She published a detailed account in the summer of 1901, known as the Hobhouse Report. This report sparked a wave of outrage in Britain and divided the public into supporters and opponents of the concentration camp system. As a result, Hobhouse faced intense criticism from the British government and was often labeled a traitor for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of the Boers. However, the British government acted under public pressure.
