Product details

While psychoanalysis plays almost no role in contemporary clinical psychology, the renaissance of psychoanalytic thought in the field of language production is all the more interesting. In this work, Nicole Ufer examines Freud's theory of slips and uses psychoanalytic considerations regarding eating disorders (obesity, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa) as a heuristic for generating empirically testable hypotheses. To test these hypotheses, a technique for the experimental induction of slips, known as the SLIP technique, was employed. Overall, it was shown that women suffering from an eating disorder are more likely to make slips when dealing with conflictual, i.e., eating disorder-related material, compared to healthy women. Integrating these results into cognitive psychological models of language production (e.g., Levelt, 1989) is hardly feasible.
